S.O.'s/Stenographer's (Grade 'B'/Grade-I) Limited Departmental Competitive Examination (Overview)

Union Public Service Commission holds a Combined Limited Departmental Competitive Examination for additions in the Select Lists for the Section Officers Grade and Stenographers Grade-I/Grade 'B' of the services like 

  • Section Officers Grade of Central Secretariat Service.
  • Section Officers Grade (Integrated Grade II & III) of General Cadre of Indian Foreign Service, Branch 'B'.
  • Section Officers Grade of Railway Board Secretariat Service
  • Grade 'A' & 'B' merged of Central Secretariat Stenographers' Service.
  • Grade-I of the Stenographers Cadre of Indian Foreign Service, Branch 'B'.
  • Grade 'A' & 'B' merged of Armed Forces Headquarters Stenographers Service.
  • Grade 'B' of the Railway Board Secretariat Stenographers' Service.
  • Section Officers Grade of  the Intelligence Bureau.
  • Section Officers Grade of Armed Forces Head Quarters Civil Service.

Age - limits

No age limit prescribed. The examination is confined to serving Central Government Employees working as Assistant in the Assistant Grade of the Central Secretariat Service. Railway Board Sectt. Service, Intelligence Bureau, Armed Forces headquarters Civil Services; or Stenographer Grade-C of the Central Secretariat Stenographers' Service/Railway Board Secretariat Stenographers' Service/Armed Forces headquarters Stenographers' Service/Grade II of the I.B. Stenographers' Service or any post in the Indian Foreign Service, branch 'B' and attached and subordinate office with 5 years approved and continuous service on the 1st of July of the year of exam.

No specific educational qualification prescribed.

Scheme of Examination

Part A : Candidates have to appear in the following conventional (Essay Type) papers
1. Noting and drafting, precis writing.
2. (i) Procedure and Practice in Government of India Secretariat and Attached offices. (For Categories I, II and IX)
  (ii) Procedure and Practice in Government of India Secretariat and Attached offices. (For Categories IV, V and VI)
  (iii) Procedure and Practice in Government of India Secretariat and Attached offices. (For Categories VII only)
  (iv) Office Procedure and Practice (For Category III)
  (v) Office Procedure and Practice (For Category VII)
3. (i) General Knowledge of the constitution of India and the Machinery of Government, Practice and Procedure in Parliament (for categories I, II, III and IX)
  (ii) General Knowledge of the constitution of India and the Machinery of Government, Practice and Procedure in Parliament (for categories IV, V,VI and VII)
4. (i) General Financial and Service Rules, (For Category I)
  (ii) General Financial and Service Rules, (For Category II)
  (iii) General Financial and Service Rules, (For Category III)
  (iv) General Financial and Service Rules, (For Category V)
  (v) General Regulations and Service Rules, (For Category VI)
  (vi) Financial Regulations and Service Rules, (For Category IX)

5. General Studies
