Joint Entrance Examination (JEE)

Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is an all India common engineering entrance examination. It is conducted for admission in various engineering colleges and courses all over the country. In the year 2013, Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) replaced AIEEE and IIT-JEE with JEE
JEE Main

JEE Main is conducted to offer admissions to interested candidates in undergraduate engineering programmes at NITs (National Institutes of Technology), IIITs (Indian Institutes of Information Technology) and other centrally funded technical institutions (CFTIs) located across the country.

JEE Advanced

JEE Advanced is conducted to offer admissions to interested candidates in undergraduate engineering programmes at IITs (Indian Institute of Technology), Indian School of Mines Dhanbad, and institute that will be converted to IIT located across the country.

JEE Main Eligibility

Candidates must have passed final examination of 10+ 2 (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) or its equivalent referred to as qualifying examination below

  1. The final examination of the 10+2 system, conducted by any recognized central/state Board, such as Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi; Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi; (ICSE) etc.
  2. Intermediate or two-year Pre-University examination conducted by a recognized Board/ University
  3. Final examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy
  4. Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS)with a minimum of five subjects
  5. Any Public School/ Board/ University examination in India or in any foreign country recognized as equivalent to the 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU)
  6. H.S.C. vocational examination. [Only for Admission to IITs]
  7. A Diploma recognized by AICTE or a state board of technical education of at least 3 year duration. [Only for Admission to IITs]
  8. General Certificate Education (GCE) examination (London / Cambridge / Sri Lanka) at the Advanced (A) level [Only for Admission to IITs]
  9. High School Certificate Examination of the Cambridge University or International Baccalaureate Diploma of the International Baccalaureate Office, Geneva. [Only for Admission to IITs]

Note: In case the relevant QE is not a public examination, the candidate must have passed at least one public (Board or Pre-University) examination at an earlier level. [Only for Admission to IITs]

JEE Main Exam Pattern

JEE (Main) consists of two papers:

  • Paper 1(B.E. / B.Tech.) is conducted in two separate modes; Offline (Pen and paper based examination) and Online (Computer based examination). Candidate can choose either offline or online mode of examination.
  • Paper 2 (B.Arch. / B. Planning) is conducted only offline that is pen and paper examination.

Paper 1 (B.E./ B. Tech.)
Subjects:
Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics
Type of questions: Objective type with equal weight age to Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics
Mode of exam: Pen and Paper based OR Computer based

Paper 2 (B.Arch./ B.Planning)
Subjects:
Part I - Mathematics, Part II Aptitude Test,  Part III Drawing Test
Type of questions:Objective type; Questions to test drawing aptitude
Mode of exam: Only Pen and Paper based

NOTE: Very few Architecture colleges in India accept the score of JEE. Most of the self-financed and other architecture colleges and schools in India accept only NATA score.

JEE Advanced Eligibility

Top 1, 50,000 to 2, 00,000 candidates (including all categories as per reservation policy) based on performance in JEE (Main), qualify to appear in the JEE (Advanced) examination.

  1. The candidate must have scored at least the cut off required for his category in the JEE Mains examination.
  2. Candidates should not have taken up a seat in any of the IIT institutes or ISM with earlier JEE rank , only candidates who have taken admission in Indian Institute of Science or Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum are eligible.
  3. The candidates appearing for IIT JEE Advanced must be a top 20 percentiler in his class 12th boards or equivalent examinations at the time of counseling.
  4. Candidates must have a minimum score of 75% in board examinations for General and OBC category students and 70 % for SC /ST Category students.

 

JEE Advanced Exam Patern
  • Paper 1
  • Paper 2

Both the papers are conducted on the same day.

Each Paper (Paper 1 & Paper 2) has time duration of 3 hours

Both, Paper 1 & Paper 2 has 3 categories, namely

  1. Physics
  2. Chemistry
  3. Mathematics

Each category has 3 sections,

  • Section 1 has 10 MCQ’s. Each question has 4 options with only one correct answer
  • Section 2 has 5 MCQ’s. Each question has 4 options with one or more correct answer(s)
  • Section 3 has 5 questions with single digit integer ranging from 0 to 9

Just like Paper 1, paper 2 also has 3 sections,

  • Section 1 has 8 MCQ’s. Each question has 4 options with only one correct answer
  • Section 2 has 8 MCQ’s. Each question will have four options with only one correct answer. This section contains four paragraphs (which includes theory, practical aspects, data). Two questions will be asked from each paragraph.
  • Section 3 has four questions which will be Matching List type questions. Two lists are given with matching options coded as a, b, c, and d. Based on the given codes, correct answers has to be chosen.
Additional Information for Candidates for JEE (Advanced)

The candidates who are declared eligible for JEE (Advanced) – 2016 will have to again register later on at the JEE (Advanced) website http://jeeadv.ac.in after the declaration of the JEE (Main)-2016 score. They may note that it is compulsory to appear in both the papers of JEE (Advanced) - 2016 to be eligible for admission to IIT.

Application Procedure for JEE (Main) AND JEE (Advanced)
In order to appear in JEE (Main) and JEE (Advanced) 2016, the candidates are required to apply only online as per procedure detailed below.
Applying Online and Submission of Application
  • The online submission of particulars,
    • uploading of scanned photograph,
    • signature and
    • thumb impression may be made at JEE (Main) website.
  • The candidates should supply all the required details while filling up the online form. On submission of details, a Acknowledgement Page with Application No. shall be generated.
  • Candidates are required to take printout of Acknowledgement Page and keep it for reference. The Acknowledgement Page is not required to be sent to JEE (Main) Secretariat.
  • The application fee payment can be made: a) by credit/debit card, or (b) by  depositing  fee  in  cash  in  the  Syndicate/Canara/ICICI/HDFC  bank  through  e-challan generated during the online filling of application form.
